When I see a photo in this book .... BOOM .... I'm there! I'm in the boat, or I'm standing in the water. I'm pulling on a ten pound steelhead, or a twenty pound chinook. I can feel the rod bend and pump. I can smell the ocean, smell the Chinook. I'm reaching for the net. I grab the fly to pull it free from a jaw. I'm cold or hot — my hands shake. Water splashes my face when the Chinook flips its tail in the shallows, over eelgrass and estuary sand. Now I'm rinsing fish slime off my hands ....My hope is that you too will feel a little of this when you study these photos. If you love to fish, I think you will. "Every Picture Tells A Story, Don't It?" (Rod Stewart lyrics). You'll see images of people fishing; our boats, the places where we fish, the fine specimens we bring to hand, and our tackle in action. This book completes my Honest Flies Volume — creating a home for several hundred story-images recorded during a day on the water. Some of these images are accompanied by prose — my nostalgic memory of these days I'm now sharing with you. Other pages might have little more than a location name, a few words, or no text whatsoever.Anyone who has fished — anyone who is an angler at heart — will appreciate these images.My photos only reach back to the mid 1990s, and mostly record images of Chinook fly fishing. It is what it is, as the saying goes. I’m thrilled to share the best I have. The pages between this cover tell so many stories. Please use your imagination, bring life to the pictures you see here, when I haven’t used my words well, or at all.I've attempted to organize these stories by date, place, species, and sometimes, I've added a few words to frame the story. You'll find pictures of steelhead, salmon, and a few other species too: like black rockfish, lingcod, and albacore. My philosophy as a fishing photographer is this: any photo is better than no photo. If I push the button enough, a few are likely to help tell a story about the day.I learned to shove my camera in a friend’s hands and mumble something about how to find the “button” to trip the shutter. Needless, there are some wonderful stories I can’t share here, because I have no photos of the event — no photo .... no story.So here we are.
